Stroke Outcomes

The performance measures in the tables below were developed by the Joint Commission in partnership with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) and show how Sparrow Hospital compares against state and national benchmarks as well as American Heart Association recommendations.

Comparison of Median Time in Minutes to Give Alteplase Treatment

Timing is critical for treating patients with ischemic stroke. The table below compares Sparrow Hospital’s median time of 44 minutes to give Alteplase (tPA) treatment to the American Heart Association goal (less than 60 minutes); the national benchmark of 46 minutes; and the Michigan Benchmark of 50 minutes.

The chart also shows Sparrow Hospital’s percentage of eligible patients treated within 60 minutes of arrival (88.9%) and 45 minutes of arrival (50%) as compared to the AHA goal (75% and 50%) national benchmark (81.8% and 50.9%.) and Michigan benchmark (80.6% and 47.8%).

2018 Procedure Outcomes

Those who are not getting better with clot-busting medication can be considered for minimally invasive procedures to remove the clot from clogged vessels.

The procedure outcomes below show the Michigan Medicine percentage of major complications as compared to the Joint Commission target for four stroke-related procedures:

  • Symptomatic carotid endarterectomy and carotid artery stenting: 6/66 = 9.01% as compared to Joint Commission target of <6%
  • Asymptomatic carotid endarterectomy and carotid artery stenting: 1/59 = 1.6% as compared to Joint Commission target of <3%
  • Diagnostic angiogram: 2/212 = 0.9% as compared to Joint Commission target of <1%
