The insulin pump is a small battery-operated
device, about the size of an average pager, that delivers a constant amount of
short-acting insulin and takes the place of standard syringe therapy.
Insulin pumps are programmable to allow very
flexible, accurate dosing patterns. They are excellent tools to help control
blood sugar with maximum freedom for changes in daily schedules and eating
patterns.
Pumps are very user friendly, but not automatic. The
user is still responsible for determining how many carbohydrates are eaten.
