Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Individuals with obstructive sleep apnea may stop breathing hundreds of time a night, which severely interrupts their sleep. Poor sleep at night can show effects during the day, as people have trouble functioning, are less alert, and more prone to accidents. Obstructive sleep apnea can lead to health complications, such as high blood pressure, heart damage, heart attack and stroke.

At the Sparrow Ionia Hospital Sleep Diagnostic Clinic, two private rooms for an overnight stay allow technicians to monitor the activity of the brain, the heart, the muscle movements of the legs and measuring of air flow, effort of thorax and abdomen while trying to breathe, and oxygen saturation. The patients are studied all night to make sure there are no problems.
