Updated information on COVID-19 and Flu: Restricted visitation is now in effect

The Sparrow Palliative Care Program was founded in 2002 to ensure the delivery of compassionate, supportive care for patients dealing with serious illness. We are committed to helping our patients and their loved ones meet the challenges of serious illness and to help patients and their families live each day to the fullest. We believe in maintaining patient dignity while supporting individual patient and family wishes.

What is Palliative Care?

Palliative care is care that focuses on the whole person. We are committed to relieving symptoms including, but not limited to, pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, constipation, nausea, loss of appetite, depression, anxiety, and difficulty sleeping. It can help patients and families carry on with daily life, including tolerating medical treatments. Palliative care provides the opportunity to review goals of care when facing serious illness. Palliative care is appropriate at any stage of illness and can be provided along with treatments that are meant to cure.

Sparrow’s Palliative Care Team

Our Palliative Care Team is a physician-led, multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals within the hospital who are committed to excellence in palliative and supportive care. The team works for you along with your primary care physician to identify needs, understand options, provide symptom control and review the goals of care when facing serious illness.

Sparrow Palliative Care offers:

  • Assessment and management of symptoms.
  • Attention to psychological and spiritual needs.
  • Coordination of therapies, equipment and other resources so patients are able to live each day to the fullest.
  • Consultation with professionals to assist patient and families with decision-making and end-of-life care.
  • Link to bereavement services.
  • Assistance with preparing Advance Care Directives.

Advance Directives

Advance care directives are specific written instructions, prepared in advance, that are intended to direct a person's medical care if he or she becomes unable to do so for themselves. A member of the Palliative Care team can provide individual assistance to complete Advance Care Directives.
