Transcending Change

Dear Nursing Colleagues,

The year 2012 will always be remembered as an EPIC year—and not only because of the implementation of our electronic medical record (EMR) system! Our results in nursing sensitive indicators, core measures and Patient satisfaction have reached new heights all because of your commitment to excellence.

As a Magnet-designated organization our charge is to lead the way for others, and we certainly are doing that in many areas. Take a look at our outcomes in CLABSI, Restraint Use, and Pressure Ulcers, for example. In some areas we were able to sustain our gains made in 2011, like Patient Falls and Ventilator Associated Pneumonia.

Professional activities have also demonstrated significant positive trends in National Certification, RN to BSN completion and podium and poster presentations. The Sparrow Nurse is being recognized by prestigious awards and in elected positions at state and national levels through national initiatives. And yet transcending these hallmarks of distinction, we relish in providing fundamental care at the bedside simply because we love what we do!

The personal accountability demonstrated by every nurse demands perfection, and so our efforts in practice review are evolving into true peer review—at the unit level and for each Sparrow Nurse.

We are inspired by your expert clinical knowledge and skills. Keeping Patients at the center of our care practices is clearly reflected in letters and comments we receive every day, and in phone conversations while following up after discharge. As the nation transitions to pay for performance, Sparrow Nurses are well-positioned to contribute to Sparrow’s success through complete alignment of our goals. Thank you for your commitment to evidence-based care, Patient-centered practice and leading us all in the Sparrow Way.

Sincerest regards,

Elizabeth Henry MN, RN
Senior Vice President/Chief Nursing Officer

Carol A. Dwyer MSN, MM, RN, CENP

Dec. 1, 2012—iSparrow EMR Launch

Nurses played a crucial role in ensuring Sparrow had a successful transition to the iSparrow Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system in December 2012. iSparrow EMR gives our Caregivers secure and immediate access to Patients’ medical records, so the most current information is available to ensure the highest quality care and the safety of our Patients. More than 1,600 Nurses trained on the software before Go-Live, taking classes and working with Super Users to prepare. iSparrow EMR supports Sparrow’s efforts to address challenges such as increasing prevalence of chronic disease and an aging population, improving the quality of care and the Patient experience, and ensuring greater affordability.
