Nursing Bylaws
A task force was convened in 2010 to propose necessary changes to the Sparrow Nursing Bylaws. Changes to the bylaws were proposed to strengthen, clarify, and better define our shared governance. The following changes were proposed by the Bylaws Task Force:

Inclusion of the Transformational Model of Professional Practice
Revisions to better define the Shared Decision-Making Model
Nursing Research Committee transformed to Nursing Research Council to increase direct Caregiver participation/representation
Update to the Magnet Model teams to reflect re-designation structure, including the change to a Magnet Coordinating Committee in place of a Steering Committee to drive the initiatives and involvement necessary to succeed

Direct Care Nurses—13.9 percent
Nurse Leaders—21.4 percent
Percentage of Nurses with a minimal education of a BSN:
Direct Care Nurses—34.4 percent

Commitment to Community Involvement

In fall 2010, Nursing and Pharmacy held 11 flu vaccine clinics in the Sparrow Hospital lobby staffed by Volunteer Sparrow Nurses and pharmacists. Through these efforts 221 Associates and 91 community members were vaccinated.

Daisy Award Initiative

While attending the annual AONE Conference Sparrow Nurse Manager Katie Sefton, BSN, RN, CNML, learned of the opportunity to bring the DAISY Award back to Sparrow. This award was founded to recognize Nurses for daily above-and-beyond care provided to Patients and families.

All Nurses are eligible for the DAISY Award. The program was developed and nominations requested in 2010.

Nominations may be submitted by Sparrow Caregivers to recognize their co-workers. There will soon be nomination forms available in public places for families and visitors to recognize the Nurse who cared for a loved one. It provides the opportunity for others to take time out of their day to recognize someone they work with for the exceptional care they have delivered. We believe there are many DAISYs waiting to shine!

Recognition of Nursing

In recognition of our Magnet status, a pinning ceremony was held at the March Magnet Champion meeting. All Nurses received Magnet pins in spring 2010. New Nurses receive their Magnet pin in nursing orientation.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Evelyn Bochenek, MSN, RN, Director of Surgical Services, received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual Nurses Week tea. She was honored for her 41 years of exemplary service.

First Sparrow Nursing Executive Award

Elizabeth Henry, MN, RN, Chief Nursing Officer received the first Sparrow Nursing Executive Award for her outstanding leadership in achieving Magnet Nursing recognition for Sparrow.

7-Foster for outstanding pneumonia and influenza vaccination rates.

Most Improved Practice

6-West for outstanding pneumonia assessments.

Penny Stevens, DNP, RN, Manager of the Trauma Center, received a first-place award from the Society of Trauma Nurses for her presentation on post-concussive symptoms in children.
