The mission and vision of Sparrow Nursing directly reflects and supports the strategic priorities of the hospital. Sparrow's vision is to be recognized as a national leader in quality and Patient experience. Our nursing mission—to provide high-quality nursing care utilizing the Transformational Model of Professional Practice—enables Sparrow to be successful in both mission and vision.

Strategic Planning

Sparrow's CNO and Vice President of Nursing participate in establishing the hospital's strategic objectives that strongly support the hospital's Mission and Vision.

A strategic plan for nursing was developed utilizing the five pillars of People, Service, Quality, Resources and Growth. Nurses at every level had input and impact on outcomes through a shared decision-making model of Nursing Councils and Committees. This aggressive plan was implemented in the first quarter of 2010.

In March 2010, the Nurse Coordinating Council—comprised of front-line Nurses from various units, Vice President of Nursing Carol Dwyer, and Chief Nursing Officer Elizabeth Henry—came together with the manager and director Nurse mentors from each Nursing Council. The Nurse Coordinating Council determined the focus of work of each Nursing Council in support of the Strategic Plan for the coming year. Each council selected its specific goals to guide the councils throughout 2010. Their achievements were highlighted at the Annual State of Nursing in January 2011.

Education Council
Promoted "Save the Date" flyers to develop greater awareness of educational opportunities
Conducted an "Educational Fair" in October with university representatives on-site promoting RN to BSN programs
Joined the National Nursing Practice Network (NNPN)
Supported numerous RNs in obtaining funding assistance for educational events through the Sue Tadgerson Education Fund

Practice Council
Piloted the situation, background, assessment, and recommendation (SBAR) handoff tool in several units
Reviewed practice policies using the Transformational Model of Professional Practice and evidence-based practice.
Enhanced Central Line Infection Prevention Bundle in Critical Care and on 5 West to decrease Blood Stream Infections
Developed Urine-8 bundle and introduced to all staff to reduce risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infections

Quality Council
Improved member expertise in quality improvement processes
Initiated Medication Improvement Dispensing project
Continued to monitor core measures, hand hygiene, falls and pressure ulcers
Increased understanding of scorecard reports

Research Council
Promoted nursing research studies at Sparrow
Promoted evidence-based practice fellowships
Disseminated research at Lansing Community Nursing Research Day, ANIA-CARE Informatics Conference, and National Nurses in Staff Development Conference
Collaborated with Michigan State University College of Nursing to support nursing research

Advocacy and Influence

Chief Nursing Officer Elizabeth Henry, MN, RN, was selected to participate on the Michigan Statewide Task Force for Nursing Practice to define and transform nursing practice in Michigan. In response to the IOM report, the focus is to impact change through the legislative branch to allow Nurses to practice to the extent of their education and competencies. Staff Nurses will participate in forums to voice and influence change that will shape nursing practice for years to come.

Vice President of Nursing Carol Dwyer, MSN, MM, RN, was chosen to serve on the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) Strategic Planning Committee. Key strategies and tactics were identified to guide Nurse leaders in addressing issues.

Elizabeth Henry, MN, RN, and Chris Jodoin, MSN, RN, NE-BC, served as Nurse leaders in the negotiation of the contract with the Professional Employees Council at Sparrow Hospital (PECSH). As leaders they advocated for clarity in the staffing guidelines, leading to increased staffing ratios.

Staff Nurses and nursing leaders alike participated in the annual "March on the Capital." The event provided an opportunity to educate local legislators on key issues and nursing's role in health care.

Visibility, Accessibility and Communication

Nurse leader rounding at Sparrow is not limited to interacting daily with Patients. Nurse leaders round on each of their Associates in a formal way at least four times per year. This interaction allows the Nurse leader to provide one-on-one coaching and mentoring for each Caregiver. In addition, Nurse managers have open door policies that make it easy to access them throughout the shift. Service line directors are also visible on their units while rounding on Patients, interacting with staff, and holding meet and greets or open forums.

Chief Nursing Officer Elizabeth Henry and Vice President of Nursing Carol Dwyer each make weekly rounds on the units. During these rounds they reward and recognize staff, validate that processes are implemented, share priorities, and answer questions. In addition to the weekly rounds, Ms. Henry holds monthly open forums that are open for any Caregiver to attend.
