OXYGEN CONCENTRATOR INSTRUCTIONS
Your primary oxygen system is called an oxygen concentrator, which is electrically powered by household current. Read and follow the general instructions for home oxygen therapy, which have been provided. Equipment Preparation: There is NO SMOKING in the area where the oxygen is in use. Oxygen DOES NOT EXPLODE but helps combustion.
- Place your oxygen concentrator away from heat sources, open flames, smoking materials and out of direct sunlight.
- Plug in the power cord.
- If using a water bottle, attach as instructed and ensure that all connections are secure in order to prevent leaks.
- Connect the small diameter tubing from your mask, cannula, etc., onto the water bottle nipple. If using a green nipple, connect your oxygen tubing to this adapter.
- Turn the ON/OFF switch to the ON position. You will hear a shrill alarm for approximately 5-20 seconds. This is normal whenever the unit is switched on.
- Set the flow control knob to the prescribed liters per minute (LPM).
- Attach the mask, cannula, etc., to your face.
Sparrow Medical Supply will notify you of the prescribed oxygen liter flow or LPM.
Alarms: You will hear the shrill alarm whenever:
- The ON/OFF switch is switched to ON and the power cord is plugged in (alarm sounds for 5-20 seconds). This is normal.
- The ON/OFF switch is switched to ON and the power cord is not plugged in. The alarm will sound continuously. Simply plug in the power cord.
- If there is a household electrical power failure, the alarm will sound continuously. Turn the switch on the machine to OFF. When your power comes back on, turn your machine back on. Convert to your back up cylinder and call Sparrow Medical Supply.
- f there is a mechanical failure of the unit, the alarm will be heard continuously and the alarm light will be lit. Convert to your back up cylinder (see below) and call Sparrow Medical Supply.
CONVERSION TO EMERGENCY BACK-UP CYLINDER
- Locate your emergency use cylinder. It will be stored upright in a stand.
- Determine whether or not your currently used tubing will easily reach the cylinder. If it doesn't, you can either a) add more tubing as previously shown, or b) if a small cylinder, simply move it closer to your location.
- If your cylinder does not have a regulator on it, you will need to use the regulator from your portable system cylinder (if desired, you can use the contents of this cylinder first until emptied). This has been previously demonstrated for you.
- You will need to turn on the emergency cylinder. For large, tall cylinders this is done by turning the wheel on the top of the cylinder counter-clockwise. For small cylinder this is done with a cylinder wrench, again turning counter-clockwise.
- Now connect your oxygen tubing to the adaptor on the regulator and adjust the flow meter to your prescribed liter flow as previously demonstrated.
- If your concentrator is not working due to either a mechanical failure or electrical outage, take the opportunity to call us so that we will be aware of the problem. At this time we can arrange for either replacement of the machine, or delivery of more cylinders if required.

Things to do daily:
- Wipe your cannula off.
- Check the air intake filter located on the outside of the concentrator for dust. If it is dusty, remove and rinse it with warm running water. Dry between clean towels or shake excess water off and allow to air dry. Do not replace while still wet.
To do weekly:
- Replace the prefilled humidifier bottle with a new one if you are using added humidity.
- Throw away the nasal cannula and put on a new one.
To do monthly:
- Throw away the oxygen tubing and put on a new one. (You can tell the tubing from the cannula by looking at the ends. The cannula has prongs for your nose – the tubing does not.)
Taking care of problems – no flow or low flow:
- Be sure that the power cord is plugged in.
- Be sure that the on/off switch is “on.”
- Look at the flow rate to make sure you have the correct liter flow.
- Examine the 02 tubing. Make sure it is not pinched or bent. This can happen under wheels or furniture.
- Try another electrical outlet.
- If you are using a humidifier bottle, check to see if:
- The bottle is snugly connected to the outlet stem.
- The cannula is attached tightly to the outlet stem on the humidifier bottle.
- The 02 tubing does not have water in it. If it does, replace it with a new one
More things to remember:
Do not place anything liquid on top of the unit.
- Do not apply alcohol, oil, grease, petroleum products or other combustibles to any part of the machine, patient, or oxygen delivery system. These materials are a fire hazard.
- Keep the oxygen system in a well-ventilated area, away from draperies and walls. Do not place concentrator in a closet.
- Do not put oxygen tanks in closets or leave them unsecured.
OXYGEN CYLINDER EXCHANGE
The Sparrow Medical Supply Technician will instruct you how to exchange your empty oxygen cylinders. The following instructions are for your future reference.
- TURN THE EMPTY CYLINDER OFF by turning the handle at the top of the cylinder completely clockwise.
- To remove the gauge from the empty cylinder, unscrew the chrome "T" shaped handle on the right hand side of the gauge.
- Lift the gauge off the empty cylinder, set the empty cylinder aside.
- Remove the white band that marks a full cylinder. Be sure the dial on the gauge is facing in the same direction as the dial on the cylinder. Place the gauge over the valve on the full cylinder.
- Observe that a plastic washer is in place to prevent leaks.
- Be sure the 2 round, metal pins on the gauge fit into the 2 guide holes on the cylinder valve.
- Firmly tighten the chrome "T" shaped handle on the right side of the gauge. This secures the gauge to the cylinder.
- Test for leaks - turn the handle at the top of the cylinder approximately 1/2 to 1 1/2 turns counter clockwise. If the cylinder hisses near where the gauge attaches to the cylinder, tighten the chrome "T" shaped handle more securely. If it is still leaking, a new plastic washer may be helpful.
TURN THE CYLINDER VALVE COMPLETELY CLOCKWISE TO "OFF" WHEN CYLINDER IS NOT BEING USED IN ORDER TO PREVENT WASTING THE OXYGEN.

OXYGEN: GENERAL INFORMATION
Oxygen is a medication requiring a prescription from your doctor. Your prescription will include a liter flow and the length of time you are to use it. Oxygen, like any medication, has toxic levels. Therefore, never increase the liter flow above the instructions given to you, even if you become very short of breath. If you do become short of breath at the liter flow prescribed for you, notify your doctor. There may be an underlying cause for your increased shortness of breath that your doctor may want to investigate.
Oxygen may be ordered for you on a continuous basis. This means you should use it all of the time. You may take it off long enough to wash your face, shave or change your nasal cannula or mask. If you are using a mask, you should have a nasal cannula to wear while you are eating, drinking fluids or brushing your teeth.
Your doctor may prescribe oxygen only for sleep. This means you are to use it at night and for any naps during the day.
Another way it may be prescribed is for exercise. Eating, bathing, dressing and other activities of daily living are all considered exercise.
Your prescription for oxygen may include a combination of any of the above.
When a muscle is out of condition, it requires more oxygen to perform an activity than if it were in good condition. You have many muscles that you may not be aware of. Among those muscles are the heart, the stomach and muscles that help you breathe. Each of these muscles, as well as the other organs (kidneys, intestines), require an adequate supply of oxygen to function well.
Each of us is born “dependent” on oxygen. It is the substance that sustains life. When you aren’t getting enough oxygen, your whole body is unable to function normally. When your lungs can no longer meet the oxygen needs of the body you become short of breath, are more tired and may have various muscle aches. Lack of oxygen also can affect your eyes or skin and even your ability to think and remember. Gradually, you become less active because daily activities are now too difficult to do. Slowly, you begin to notice your energy is gone and your are more and more “out of shape.” For these reasons, it is very important to follow the oxygen prescription your doctor has ordered. Supplemental oxygen can benefit your whole body by easing the work of breathing and helping you continue with your daily activities.
Liquid Oxygen Instructions
Your primary oxygen system is called a Liquid Oxygen Reservoir (large unit). It is designed to be a stationary unit and cannot be moved by the patient.
Your portable oxygen system is called an Oxygen Walker (smaller unit). It may be filled from the primary reservoir when you require increased portability, such as doctor office visits, shopping, going for walks, etc.
Read and follow all instructions, including the general precautions for the safe use of oxygen in the home which has been provided.
- Primary Oxygen System - Large Reservoir Unit
- The Sparrow Medical Supply Representative will place the large reservoir unit in the location that you specify, a central area is recommended when possible. (The reservoir must not be placed near heat sources.) A long length of tubing may be attached to allow you greater mobility to adjacent rooms or areas. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MOVE THE LARGE RESERVOIR UNIT. If you wish to change the location of your unit, please call Sparrow Medical Supply and a representative will relocate the unit for you.
- A humidifier bottle may be attached to the threaded outlet on the front of the unit. The representative will instruct you and/or family members on how to change and reconnect this humidifying device. Make sure all connections are tight in order to prevent leaks.
- Small diameter tubing from your oxygen cannula or mask is attached to the plastic nipple.
- The oxygen flow control knob is located just above the nipple. This knob is used to turn the oxygen "on" or "off". Use your oxygen as prescribed by your physician; in other words, the specified number of hours per day at the ordered flow rate. If your doctor changes your oxygen prescription, please notify Sparrow Medical Supply.
- Adjust the flow control knob to prescribed liters per minute, which is prescribed by your doctor and attach the cannula or mask to your face. When not using your oxygen, always turn the flow control knob to "zero" or "off".
- A meter located on the top of the reservoir unit indicates the amount of oxygen remaining. Use the following link for a chart of Duration Times (.pdf, Adobe Acrobat required.)
- A Sparrow Medical Supply Representative will deliver additional liquid oxygen to your home one to two times per week, depending upon your usage. If the meter needle points to 1/4 or lower, call Sparrow Medical Supply.
- Cryo2 Portable Oxygen System - Small Unit

NOTE: If unit has "pulsed" switch and is set at "pulsed" rather than "continuous", it will provide oxygen for a longer period of time.
- To fill the portable unit:
- Wipe moisture off the metal couplings on the large reservoir and on the bottom of the small portable unit.
- Turn the flow control knob on the portable unit to "zero". The flow control knob on the large reservoir unit may remain on the prescribed setting during filling of the portable.
- Observe that the needle on the meter at the top of the large reservoir is 1/4 or higher.
- Mate the metal coupling on the large reservoir with the coupling on the bottom of the small portable unit. Align the yellow arrows so that they point at each other.
- Press down gently on the top of the portable unit and rotate it counter clockwise ( in the direction of the arrow) about 1/4 turn.
- Lift the black handle marked "vent valve". You will hear a hissing sound as the portable unit fills, this takes approximately 30 seconds.
- The unit is full when you see a large amount of vapor escaping from the bottom of the portable. To stop filling, flip the "vent valve" handle down.
- Wait approximately 30 seconds, then rotate the portable unit clockwise about 1/4 turn. Lift the portable unit to separate it from the large reservoir tank.
- Lift the portable unit by the handle or strap attached to the scale. Observe that the scale indicates "full". If the scale does not read "full", repeat steps 4 through 9.
- To use the portable oxygen unit, simply turn the "Flow Control" knob to the prescribed setting and attach the tubing. No humidifier bottle is necessary due to short term use. Occasionally check the scale to determine the amount of oxygen remaining in order to prevent the possibility of running out of oxygen while away from home.

Important points to remember.
- Fill unit no more than about 1/2 hour prior to leaving home to prevent waste of oxygen from evaporation.
- Do not attempt to only partially fill unit. For example, do not attempt to fill only to the 1/2 mark. This may adversely effect the operation of the portable unit. Always fill the unit to the "full" mark on the scale.
- Re-check the scale often to prevent possibility of running out. Be prepared to return home to fill the unit when the scale indicated 1/4 full or less.
- Unit will not store oxygen for extended periods of time during non-use (due to evaporation). This waste of oxygen can be minimized by keeping the unit out of direct sunlight and in a cool environment. When returning home, you should use the rest of the oxygen in the portable unit.
- When used in the "Pulse" mode, the battery must be charged at least two hours prior to use. Overnight charge is recommended.

Aerosol Nebulizer Instructions
WHAT IS AN AEROSOL NEBULIZER TREATMENT?
Your doctor has ordered aerosol therapy. The reason is to deliver the medication, in a fine mist, into your lungs.
HOW WILL THIS TREATMENT HELP?
Some of the medications used for aerosol therapy are called bronchodilators. This means that they work by relaxing the muscles surrounding the airway passages thereby allowing the person to breathe easier. Additionally, this results in an improved ability to cough up the mucous that would otherwise build up to excessive levels. Often, other medications are used in conjunction with the bronchodilator to improve its effectiveness or to relieve other symptoms. One of the major advantages of aerosol therapy is that the medication is delivered directly to the lungs, thereby having fewer effects on the rest of the body.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?
You need to read the medication fact sheet that comes with your medication and learn about any medication actions or problems you might have. Some medications may cause: nervousness, shakiness, pounding in chest, or nausea. Not all medications cause these side effects and not all people react the same way (if at all). IF YOU DO - STOP and REST, wait for the feeling to lessen, then finish your treatment. If these feelings persist - you need to call your doctor.
TO SAFELY TAKE YOUR AEROSOL TREATMENTS FOLLOW THE STEPS LISTED HERE:
- To give a treatment:
- Measure the right medication dose as shown on your prescription label or as instructed by your physician. Add diluents as prescribed.
- Sit upright in a chair or in a slight recline.
- Place the mouthpiece between your teeth, close your mouth and breathe in slowly through your mouth. Take breaths deeper than normal.
- Hold your breath for as long as you comfortably can before you breathe out.
- Breathe out slowly in a relaxed way (passively).
- You should pause after about 5 minutes and try to cough. This will help to move any plugged up mucous out of your airways. You should turn the nebulizer off when you rest so you don't waste your medication.
- Keep breathing this way until all your liquid medication is used. This will be done when the nebulizer is no longer making a visible mist.
- To clean your nebulizer kit:
- After each treatment - take the kit apart, rinse each piece (exception of tubing) in hot water/dishwashing detergent solution. Rinse under hot tap water for 30 seconds to remove detergent residue. Allow to air dry.
- For reusable nebulizer only, clean daily in dishwasher using top shelf. CAUTION – The DeVilbiss Reusable Nebulizer is dishwasher safe, but do not place any disposable nebulizer parts in an automatic dishwasher; doing so could cause damage.
- Once each day - take the nebulizer apart, soak in a three parts hot tap water and one part white vinegar 30 minutes. After the 30 minutes, rinse off the vinegar/water mixture under hot water and allow to air dry. Store in a Zip-lock® bag.
- Refer to your prescription container for proper medication storage or ask your pharmacist.
- Filter replacement and/or cleaning may vary depending upon the brand of equipment used. Refer to the manufacturer's manual or training instructions provided at time of delivery.
**Note the following instructions are for the PARI LC JET non-disposable nebulizer kits
- Wash each part of the nebulizer kit after each treatment in hot, soapy water. Rinse with hot water. Air dry on a clean cloth.
- Nebulizer kits may be cleaned in a dishwasher. Place each part of the nebulizer kit in a basket on the top shelf. Air dry on a clean cloth.
- Store clean nebulizer kits in a plastic bag when dry.v • Do not get the inside of the air tubing wet. Only wash the outside of the tubing.
- The nebulizer kit must be sterilized three times per week (every other day).
- Place each part in a pan of boiling water and BOIL FOR 10 MINUTES.
- These nebulizer kits should be replaced every six months. Contact SRMS for replacement at any of our phone numbers listed in the front of this book or on the back cover.
- Wipe down the outside of the compressor with a damp cloth.
- Check with your durable medical equipment company for instructions on how to clean or change the filter.
NOTE: All questions regarding the medications, dosage, storage, etc., should be referred to your pharmacist or physician. If you have any questions regarding your Nebulizer compressor and supplies please call Sparrow Medical Supply at any location.
PATIENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR LARGE VOLUME NEBULIZERS
- Aerosol therapy is used to provide additional humidity to the air being inspired and to help liquify the mucous produced by the lungs.
- The large volume compressor has a washable foam intake filter. At a minimum, take this out and wash in soapy water, rinse well, and then let air dry before replacing once per month. Repeat more frequently if the filter appears dirty in less than a month.
- The corrugated aerosol tubing needs to be changed on a weekly basis. Simply dispose of it and replace with new tubing. If water collects in the tubing during use, do not drain it back into the nebulizer. Simply empty into a container or carry it to a sink to empty. If a water trap is being used (for extended usage), you may drain the water into this reservoir. Then empty from the resealable drain spout at the bottom of the bag. This bag also needs to be changed weekly at a minimum.
- The large volume nebulizers should be cleaned every three to four days. Disconnect from the compressor, drain out the solution, and then unscrew the top of the nebulizer. Then place in soapy water (any liquid detergent will suffice) and wash. Rinse with tap water to eliminate the soap and then disinfect the nebulizer. Vinegar is recommended by using one part vinegar to three or four parts water. Soak in this solution for thirty minutes and then rinse thoroughly in tap water. Allow to air dry and then reassemble and store for future use. If the nebulizer will not work, simply dispose it and replace with another.
Note: If you elect to use tap water in your nebulizer, the above cleaning/disinfecting needs to be done on a daily basis.
- The actual output or amount of aerosol produced can be adjusted by either: (1) changing the nebulizer entrainment device to a lower number, or (2) increasing the pressure generated by the compressor. This will be demonstrated for you at the time of initial instructions.

Patient Instructions for Suction Equipment
- Suction equipment is designed to assist in the removal of mucous from either the mouth and/or the lungs. Damage can occur to tissue if performed incorrectly or with two much pressure. Start with the lowest pressure setting and increase as ordered by your physician.
- Your suction pump has a filter that requires periodic changing. For those with felt filters, change them as they become dirty. For those with non-felt filters, change them "as needed" or if they become wet. Extra filters have been provided for this purpose.
- The collection bottle should be emptied (into the toilet) and washed daily using liquid detergent in warm water. Follow by rinsing with tap water and allow to air dry. The bottle should be changed monthly (every 4 weeks).
- The tubing leading from the collection bottle to the suction device should be changed weekly.
- The suction device being used (catheters and/or an oral suction device) may be washed in warm soapy water, rinsed in tap water, and then disinfected for re-use. To disinfect, follow washing by soaking in one part vinegar to three parts water for thirty minutes. Re-rinse with tap water and allow to dry. If you are disposing of catheters after use, always make sure you have more available.
- Always wash your hands before and after suctioning.
